Cabonne Shire (pronounced Ka-bon), ‘Australia’s Food Basket’, is home to Australia’s first gold rush and is well known for ballooning, food and wine, agriculture and mining and its bucolic farming country.

Cabonne Shire includes the classic country towns and villages of Baldry, Borenore, Cargo, Cudal, Cumnock, Eugowra, Manildra, Mullion Creek, Nashdale, Spring Terrace and Yeoval. Molong and Canowindra are Cabonne Shire’s largest towns. Cabonne is strategically located just 3 1/2 hours drive from both Sydney and Canberra.

Cabonne’s economy was founded on agriculture (mostly grains), which still accounts for a large proportion of economic activity. Recently, agricultural activities have become more diverse and mining has played an increasing role, helping to drive economic growth. Manufacturing has also become another important economic sector specifically for food and wine products.

Cabonne Shire is home to a wide range of health and medical services. Incentives for health professionals

The towns and villages of Cabonne Shire are classified as MMM5 under the Department of Health’s new “Modified Monash Model” classification system that categorises areas according to both geographical remoteness and town size. The system was developed to recognise the challenges in attracting health workers to more remote and smaller communities. Medical professionals moving from major city areas to Cabonne Shire may be entitled to relocation and retention benefits from the General Practice Rural Incentives Program.

The Health Community

Cabonne Shire is home to a wide range of health and medical services.

There are currently 2 hospitals, 5 pharmacies, 8 community/multi-purpose health services, 1 dentist and 7 independent medical practitioners in the shire. Cabonne Shire is also very well serviced by surrounding major hospitals and specialist services in Orange, Cowra and the Lachlan Health Service in Parkes and Forbes.

The Waluwin Centre/Molong Health One

The Waluwin Centre in Molong broke new ground as an innovative $3.6 million funding partnership between all three tiers of government, health service providers, community organisations and local residents. The facility houses 5 general practitioners, community health workers and allied professionals, such as a speech therapist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, and child and family health nurses, as well as pathology services. It is also the headquarters of the council’s Family Day Care and Family Links services and is the venue for community playgroups, mothers’ groups, community meetings and training sessions.

The Waluwin Community Centre has been described as “the pinnacle of best practice in Australia”. This new model of care has a focus on preventative care, involving early detection of illnesses, early diagnosis, intervention and treatment.

Molong Hospital in King Street is a public hospital with an emergency department, which also offers a domiciliary care unit and nursing home care unit.

Canowindra

Canowindra Soldiers Memorial Hospital predominantly acts as an emergency treatment and recovery satellite of Orange Base Hospital. The staff are dedicated and provide excellent care. Services also include a small X-ray facility and an excellent physiotherapy department. The hospital is serviced by both the local GPs.

Culture and Lifestyle

As a shire consisting of 11 small towns and villages, the people of Cabonne work hard to maintain, and have a strong appreciation for, their cultural, sporting and lifestyle facilities, clubs and services. Smaller communities such as those in Cabonne offer a rich array of festivals and events which bring communities together.

Sports and leisure activities are also popular in the villages of Cabonne, from cricket, rugby and swimming clubs to Men’s Sheds, Country Women’s Associations, Rotary and Lions Clubs and Garden Clubs.

As Cabonne is predominately an agricultural region, each town showcases its produce, animals and community at its own annual Agricultural Show. See the table below for months of each Agricultural Show.

Cabonne is also home to one of the world’s most important fossil discoveries. A chance discovery in 1955 revealed an extensive fossil bed dating from the Devonian Period. This 360-370 million year old fossil deposit contains the remains of thousands of freshwater fish. Many were new to science. The best of the fossils so far recovered are now on public display at Canowindra, at the Age of Fishes Museum. www.ageoffishes.org.au

One of the fossils found at Canowindra, Mandageria Fairfaxi, was recently named at the NSW State Fossil emblem.

Your Children

Cabonne Shire has a well-established and high quality education network. There are a total of 7 pre-school/childcare facilities, 17 primary schools and 3 public high schools (Canowindra, Yeoval and Molong).

Students living in the villages of Canowindra, Cudal, Cargo & Molong who attend private school in Orange are able to access a daily bus service. Students living in Eugowra access high schools on Forbes or Canowindra.

Sporting clubs are very popular with children in country towns, from the social Swim Club get togethers at the local pool on lazy summer Friday evenings, to the rugby union, rugby league and cricket teams for all ages. Pony Clubs are also found in most towns.
