About Oberon

Oberon is a thriving rural hamlet nestled in the high country of the greater Blue Mountains, just 2.5 hours from Sydney and thirty-five minutes from the major inland city of Bathurst.

Oberon has the lowest unemployment rates in the region and relative to its size contributes considerably to the regional economy. Investment has almost doubled in recent years, reflecting the attractiveness of the area.

Oberon’s economy is dominated by the timber industry, including the growing and processing of timber, which underpins the large manufacturing sector in the region.

Agriculture has historically been the focus of the economy with strengths in not only timber but prime lamb and beef cattle, horticulture and nut trees. The economy today still maintains a strength in agriculture, which is complemented by a strong manufacturing sector.

Oberon has an active cultural community embracing the arts, crafts, music, drama, and events. Several well-known artists and craftspeople have studios in the district.

Incentives for health professionals

Oberon is classified as MMM5 under the Department of Health’s new “Modified Monash Model” classification system that categorises areas according to both geographical remoteness and town size. The system was developed to recognise the challenges in attracting health workers to more remote and smaller communities. Medical professionals moving from major city areas to Oberon may be entitled to relocation and retention benefits from the General Practice Rural Incentives Program.

The Health Community

The Oberon Multi-Purpose Health Service is located on two sites. The main site, the Oberon Hospital, houses acute services, high level residential aged care services, community health service, radiology, a very busy emergency service and the wonderful Robey Centre, which provides aged day care three days a week, and Meals on Wheels. The Robey Centre is a place where local elderly can visit, have a chat, a cup of coffee, a meal and of course games of bingo, and also go on regular day trips and outings.

Oberon’s new aged care home opened in 2015, with low care, high care and dementia care. Oberon also has a set of self care units within an easy distance to the Oberon Hospital.

Some other services that are available through the Health Service are audiometry, a dietician, mental health, a women’s health service, a foot clinic, physiotherapy, a social worker, speech pathology and many other services.

Oberon also has its very own modern medical centre housing a number of local doctors and its own ambulance service. Bathurst Base Hospital is also very close by for services such as maternity. Oberon currently has 4 FTE doctors and a dentist.

Culture & Lifestyle

Enjoy Oberon’s country lifestyle – clean air, little traffic, crisp alpine climate, a short drive or walk to work friendly people, a real sense of community, a safer environment, and some of the most spectacular scenery in NSW.

The Summer and Spring Garden Festivals in Oberon Shire are a chance to rediscover these simple pleasures, sharing the lifestyle, history, culture, produce, secrets, stories and hospitality of the Oberon Circle of Villages, which includes Black Springs, Burraga, Rockley, O’Connell, Tarana and Hampton.

Summer in the tablelands is the season of bounty. Fruits are in season, trout are in the streams, and adventure is in the air. Village life brings its own flavour to summer, with the pleasures of the home made and home grown.

Autumn in the tablelands brings the first promise of change and with it some interesting Cool Events. Mushrooms can be discovered in the forests, nights are becoming cool with days perfect for walking or mountain biking. Winter brings occasional snow with comfort food around cosy fires and the chance to hunt for truffles – black gold or be part of Yulefest at Jenolan Caves.

Spring is the season to visit our wonderful country gardens. Different from urban gardens these have often been developed from virgin bush or lush farmland. Many gardens are under active development. This is the time to see nature bursting forth after a long winter
